How to Move in the Rain: Protect Your Stuff

Rain on moving day is not ideal, but it happens, and rescheduling is usually not an option. Most professional movers will work in the rain unless there is lightning or dangerous conditions. The key is preparation. With $30 to $50 in plastic sheeting and some strategic planning, you can move in the rain without water damage to your belongings.

Waterproofing Furniture and Mattresses

Wrap upholstered furniture completely in plastic stretch wrap before it goes outside. A roll of stretch wrap costs $10 to $15 and covers a sofa, loveseat, and two chairs. For mattresses, use mattress bags which cost $5 to $15 each and seal with tape at the bottom. Wrap wooden furniture in moving blankets first, then a layer of plastic to prevent water contact while allowing the blanket to cushion against scratches. Do not leave plastic directly on wood for extended periods because it traps moisture. Remove the plastic as soon as items are inside the truck or new home. Leather furniture is especially vulnerable to water spots, so prioritize wrapping leather pieces first.

Protecting Boxes and Paper Goods

Cardboard boxes and rain are a terrible combination. Wet boxes lose structural integrity within minutes and can collapse, dropping your belongings. Line the inside of boxes with garbage bags before packing fragile items. For boxes already packed, wrap the outside in large garbage bags, cutting holes for carrying handles. Move boxes quickly from doorway to truck using a relay system with one person at the door, one at the truck, and one loading. Use plastic storage bins instead of cardboard for electronics, documents, and anything that cannot get wet at all. If you are doing a DIY move, back the truck as close to the door as possible and set up a tarp canopy between the door and truck ramp.

Electronics and Sensitive Items

Electronics and water do not mix. Wrap TVs, monitors, and computer towers in garbage bags over their moving blanket or bubble wrap layer. Seal the bags with tape at every opening. Transport electronics in your personal vehicle if possible, where you can control exposure. For stereo equipment and gaming consoles, double-bag them in large trash bags. Keep original packaging for electronics if you have it, as it provides the best combined protection against impact and water. Hard drives, laptops, and tablets should ride in waterproof bags inside your personal essentials bag. Power down all electronics at least 30 minutes before they might be exposed to rain so they are completely cool and not drawing moisture.

Floor Protection and Safety on Rainy Days

Wet shoes on hardwood, tile, and laminate floors create a slip hazard and track in dirt. Lay down extra floor runners and replace cardboard floor protection with plastic sheeting since cardboard gets soggy and useless when wet. Place absorbent mats or old towels at every entrance. Have movers wear shoe covers or change into dry shoes when entering the home. Keep a stack of towels by the door for wiping down items as they come inside. Slow down on stairs and ramps because wet surfaces drastically increase the risk of slips. If you are using a loading ramp, lay rubber mats or towels on the ramp surface for traction. Taking an extra hour to move safely in rain is better than a hospital visit from a fall.
