Moving Costs
All 10 questions →Do movers charge extra for stairs?
Yes. Most movers add a stair fee of $50 to $100 per flight when there is no elevator. Some charge per flight per trip, which adds up fast in a multi-story walkup.
Are moving expenses tax deductible in 2026?
For most people, no. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act suspended the moving expense deduction for civilians through 2025, and Congress has not restored it. Active-duty military members who move due to a permanent change of station can still deduct moving expenses.
How much should you tip movers?
The standard tip is $20 to $30 per mover for a half-day local move and $40 to $50 per mover for a full day or long-distance move. Tip each crew member individually in cash at the end of the job.
Hiring Movers
All 10 questions →How far in advance should I book movers?
Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead for moves between September and May. For summer moves (June through August), book 8 to 12 weeks ahead. Last-minute bookings within 2 weeks often cost 20-30% more and have limited crew availability.
How do I verify a moving company is licensed?
For interstate moves, search the FMCSA database at protectyourmove.gov using the company name or USDOT number. Every legitimate interstate mover must have an active USDOT number and MC (Motor Carrier) number. For local moves, check your state's licensing board.
What is a moving broker vs a moving carrier?
A carrier owns trucks and employs the crew that moves your belongings. A broker does not own trucks - they sell moves and assign them to carriers. Brokers are not inherently bad, but you have less control over which crew shows up and disputes can be harder to resolve.
Packing & Preparation
All 10 questions →How many boxes do I need for a 2-bedroom move?
Plan for 30 to 50 boxes for a 2-bedroom apartment or home. That breaks down to roughly 15-20 medium boxes, 8-12 small boxes, 5-8 large boxes, and 2-3 wardrobe boxes. Actual count depends on how much you declutter beforehand.
What items can movers NOT transport?
Movers cannot transport hazardous materials (propane tanks, paint, chemicals, ammunition), perishable food, plants (interstate), pets, or personal documents/valuables. Some also refuse to move items not packed in boxes.
How do I pack electronics safely for a move?
Use original boxes when possible. Wrap screens with soft blankets or bubble wrap, fill empty space with packing paper, and label cables. Back up all data before the move. Keep electronics out of extreme heat - do not leave them in the truck overnight in summer.
Timing & Scheduling
All 10 questions →When is the cheapest month to move?
January and February are the cheapest months to move, with rates 20-30% lower than summer. October through March is generally off-peak. Avoid June through August when prices peak due to high demand.
How long does a local move take?
A local move typically takes 3 to 5 hours for a 1-bedroom, 5 to 7 hours for a 2-bedroom, and 7 to 10 hours for a 3-bedroom. This includes loading, driving, and unloading. Add 2 to 3 hours if movers are packing for you.
How long does a cross-country move take?
A cross-country move typically takes 7 to 21 days from pickup to delivery. The transit time depends on distance, route, and season. Coast-to-coast moves (2,500+ miles) average 10 to 14 business days. Expedited delivery is available for a premium.
Housing & Leases
All 10 questions →How much is a typical security deposit?
Most security deposits equal one to two months rent. Some states cap deposits at one month. High-demand markets may charge first month, last month, and security deposit upfront - totaling three months of rent before moving in.
Can I break my lease early to move?
Yes, but it usually costs money. Early termination fees are typically 1 to 3 months rent. Some leases have a buyout clause. You may also be able to sublet or find a replacement tenant to reduce the penalty. Military members have protections under the SCRA.
What utilities do I need to set up before moving in?
Set up electricity, gas, water, internet, and trash service at least 1 to 2 weeks before your move date. Some utilities require a deposit. Also update your address with the post office, banks, and insurance providers.
Special Moves
All 10 questions →How do I move with a dog or cat?
Keep pets in a quiet room on moving day, away from the chaos. For driving, use a secured crate or carrier. Update their microchip and tags with your new address. Visit the new vet within 2 weeks. Most pets adjust within 1 to 2 weeks.
What airline pet policies should I know about when moving?
Most airlines allow small pets in-cabin for $100 to $200 each way. Pets must fit in a carrier under the seat. Larger pets fly as cargo for $200 to $500. Some breeds (snub-nosed dogs) are banned from cargo. Book early - airlines limit pets per flight.
How do I transfer my kids' school records when moving?
Request records from the current school 2 to 4 weeks before the move. You will need transcripts, immunization records, IEP/504 plans, and standardized test scores. Most states require immunization records for enrollment. Some schools transfer records digitally.
Insurance & Claims
All 10 questions →What is released value protection for moving?
Released value is the free, minimum coverage movers are required to offer. It pays $0.60 per pound per damaged item - not per pound of the total shipment. A 50-pound TV worth $1,000 would only pay out $30 under released value.
What is full value protection for moving?
Full value protection (FVP) makes the mover liable for the current replacement value of damaged or lost items. The mover can repair, replace, or pay cash value. It typically costs $300 to $800 for a $50,000 declared value with a $250 to $500 deductible.
Should I buy third-party moving insurance?
Consider it if your belongings are worth more than $50,000 or you have items of high sentimental value. Third-party policies cost $100 to $500 and often provide broader coverage than full value protection, including coverage for owner-packed boxes.
DIY Moving
All 10 questions →What size moving truck do I need?
Studio to 1-bedroom: 10 to 12-foot truck. 2-bedroom: 15 to 17-foot truck. 3-bedroom: 20 to 22-foot truck. 4+ bedroom: 26-foot truck. When in doubt, go one size up - returning with a half-empty truck is better than making two trips.
Can I tow my car behind a moving truck?
Yes, most rental trucks support towing. Use a car carrier (all four wheels off the ground) for $200 to $400 or a tow dolly (front wheels off the ground) for $100 to $200. Not all vehicles can be towed with a dolly - check your car's manual. AWD vehicles need a car carrier.
What are the mileage rates for U-Haul vs Penske?
For local (in-town) rentals, U-Haul charges $0.69 to $0.99 per mile on top of the daily rate. Penske charges $0.69 per mile. For one-way long-distance rentals, mileage is included in the flat rate for both companies.
