How do I verify a moving company is licensed?

Quick Answer

For interstate moves, search the FMCSA database at protectyourmove.gov using the company name or USDOT number. Every legitimate interstate mover must have an active USDOT number and MC (Motor Carrier) number. For local moves, check your state's licensing board.

Verifying a mover's license is the single most important step in avoiding moving scams. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulates all interstate movers.

Step 1: Ask the mover for their USDOT number. Every legitimate interstate mover is required to have one. If they refuse or do not have one, walk away.

Step 2: Search the FMCSA database at protectyourmove.gov. Enter the USDOT number or company name. Check that: the registration status is "Active," the entity type includes "Carrier," and the company name matches who you are dealing with.

Step 3: Check the complaint history. The FMCSA database shows the number of complaints filed against each company in the last 3 years. Compare this to the number of moves they handle. A few complaints out of thousands of moves is normal; a high ratio is a red flag.

For local (intrastate) moves, licensing varies by state. Some states require state-specific permits, while others have minimal regulation. Check your state's Department of Transportation or Public Utilities Commission.

Additional verification: look for BBB accreditation, check Google and Yelp reviews (focus on recent reviews), and confirm the company has a physical address (not just a PO box).
