What utilities do I need to set up before moving in?

Quick Answer

Set up electricity, gas, water, internet, and trash service at least 1 to 2 weeks before your move date. Some utilities require a deposit. Also update your address with the post office, banks, and insurance providers.

Setting up utilities is one of those tasks that is easy to forget in the chaos of moving. Here is a complete checklist.

Essential utilities to set up 1-2 weeks before move-in: electricity (contact the local provider, some areas have deregulated markets with multiple providers to compare), natural gas (if applicable - same timeline as electric), water and sewer (sometimes managed by the city, sometimes by the landlord), and internet (schedule installation - ISPs often have 1-2 week lead times).

Utilities to arrange the week before: trash and recycling (check if your city provides this or if you need a private hauler), renter's insurance (many landlords require proof before move-in), and cable/streaming (if switching from your current setup).

Utilities that may transfer automatically: if you are staying within the same provider's service area, most electric and gas companies can do a simple transfer. Call 2 weeks ahead to schedule.

Deposits: new accounts often require deposits of $50 to $200 if you have no payment history with the provider. Some waive deposits with good credit.

At your old home, schedule utility disconnections for 1-2 days after your move-out date (not the day of - you need lights and water for final cleaning).

Address change checklist: USPS mail forwarding (free, do it 2 weeks early), banks and credit cards, employer and payroll, insurance providers (auto, health, renter's), voter registration, DMV (driver's license and vehicle registration within 30-60 days in most states), subscriptions and online shopping accounts.
