How long does a cross-country move take?

Quick Answer

A cross-country move typically takes 7 to 21 days from pickup to delivery. The transit time depends on distance, route, and season. Coast-to-coast moves (2,500+ miles) average 10 to 14 business days. Expedited delivery is available for a premium.

Cross-country moving timelines have two phases: loading/pickup and transit/delivery. Understanding both helps you plan the gap between homes.

Loading day: 4 to 8 hours depending on home size. This is when the crew packs the truck.

Transit and delivery by distance: 500-1,000 miles - 3 to 7 business days. 1,000-1,500 miles - 5 to 10 business days. 1,500-2,500 miles - 7 to 14 business days. 2,500+ miles (coast to coast) - 10 to 21 business days.

Why the wide ranges? Most long-distance movers consolidate shipments. Your belongings may share a truck with other customers moving in the same direction. The driver follows a route that delivers multiple shipments, which adds days. During peak season (summer), longer delivery windows are common because trucks are fuller and routes are more complex.

The delivery spread (window) is stated in your contract. A typical spread is 7-14 business days after pickup. If the mover misses the delivery window, you may be entitled to compensation (check your contract).

To get a faster delivery: ask about dedicated or express service (your items get their own truck). This costs 30-50% more but can cut delivery to 3-5 days for any distance. Book early in the month and during off-peak season for shorter windows.

Plan for the gap: you may need temporary housing, a short-term Airbnb, or a hotel for 1-2 weeks between your move-out and delivery dates.
