Can I choose my exact delivery date for a long-distance move?

Quick Answer

Not with standard service. You can set a first available delivery date, but the actual delivery falls within a window. Guaranteed delivery date services are available for an extra $500 to $1,500, or you can book a dedicated truck.

Standard long-distance moving service does not allow you to pick an exact delivery date. You will receive a delivery window (spread) because movers consolidate shipments and route trucks to maximize efficiency.

You can influence the timeline in two ways. First, set your first available delivery date (FAD) strategically. This is the earliest date you can accept delivery. Set it as early as possible so the mover has the widest window to schedule efficiently.

Second, consider premium delivery options: Guaranteed delivery date - some movers offer this for an additional $500 to $1,500. If they miss the guaranteed date, you receive compensation per the contract. Dedicated truck - your belongings are the only shipment on the truck, which travels directly to your destination. This costs 30-50% more but delivery can happen in 2-5 days for any distance. Expedited service - a middle ground where your shipment is prioritized but may still share space. Costs 15-25% more.

Practical tip: if your lease starts on the 1st and you need your belongings by then, set your FAD 2 weeks earlier and book the move accordingly. This gives the mover enough room to deliver within the standard window by your deadline.

Always build a buffer into your plans. Even guaranteed delivery dates can slip due to weather, truck breakdowns, or road conditions. Have a backup plan for 2-3 extra days without your belongings.
