Your moving truck might arrive hours after you do, or your boxes might be buried behind furniture with no time to unpack on day one. An essentials bag is the one bag you keep with you at all times during the move. Think of it as your survival kit for the first 24 to 48 hours in your new home. Here is what goes in it and why.
This is the non-negotiable layer. Pack all prescription medications with at least a 3-day supply. Include your ID, passport, lease or closing documents, moving company paperwork, and insurance cards. Bring your laptop, external hard drives, and any irreplaceable items like jewelry or family photos. Keep cash on hand for tipping movers ($20 to $40 per mover is standard for a full-day move). Store a copy of your moving inventory list in this bag so you can check boxes off as they arrive. If you are moving with children, include their medications, comfort items, and a favorite toy or book.
Pack a full change of clothes for each household member, including sleepwear and weather-appropriate layers. Moving day often involves more temperature swings than expected, from hot truck interiors to cold new spaces without heat running yet. Include basic toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shampoo, and any daily skincare. A hand towel and washcloth let you clean up without digging through boxes. If you are moving with pets, pack a separate bag with their food, water bowl, leash, medications, and a familiar blanket or toy. Consider packing a set of sheets and a pillow so you can sleep comfortably even if the bed frame is not assembled.
Pack chargers for every phone and device your household uses. Include a portable battery pack in case outlets are hard to reach behind furniture on day one. A power strip is essential since you may only have access to one or two outlets initially. Bring a small Bluetooth speaker or headphones for entertainment during unpacking. If you have smart home devices, pack the hub and any device you want connected on night one, like a smart speaker for alarms. Download offline entertainment for kids, including shows, games, and audiobooks, since WiFi will likely not be set up on day one.
Pack protein-rich snacks like nuts, granola bars, jerky, and dried fruit. Moving day burns 3,000 to 5,000 calories for active movers, and hunger leads to bad decisions and short tempers. Bring a reusable water bottle for each person and fill them before leaving the old place. Include paper towels, a multi-surface cleaning spray, hand soap, and a roll of toilet paper. Your new home needs a quick wipe-down before you put things away, and the bathroom should be functional before anything else gets unpacked. A few garbage bags let you collect packing materials as you unpack. A basic first aid kit with bandages and pain relievers handles the inevitable minor injuries.

A standard carry-on size bag or large backpack works for one person. For a family, plan on one bag per adult plus a shared snack and cleaning supply bag. Keep everything in your personal vehicle, not the moving truck.
Phone chargers and toilet paper are the two most commonly forgotten items. Medications are the most critical. Pack these items in your essentials bag the night before and do not let them end up in a moving box.
An essentials box per room is helpful for longer moves. Include a bathroom kit (toilet paper, soap, towel), a kitchen kit (paper plates, cups, utensils, snacks), and a bedroom kit (sheets, pillow, phone charger). Label them "OPEN FIRST" in large letters.
