Moving Cost Planner

DITY Move (PPM)

Definition

A Personally Procured Move (formerly "Do It Yourself" or DITY) where military members arrange and execute their own relocation. The government reimburses based on what a government-arranged move would have cost.

PPM (Personally Procured Move) replaced the term DITY in 2019 but the concept is the same. Active-duty military members can choose to handle their own PCS move instead of using a government-arranged mover.

How it works: you rent a truck, hire movers, or use a container service. You get weigh tickets before and after loading (at certified truck scales). After completing the move, you submit receipts and weigh tickets to your finance office. The government reimburses you based on what a government-contracted move would have cost for the same weight and distance.

The financial incentive: if your actual moving costs are less than the government reimbursement, you keep the difference. This "profit" is taxable income but can be significant - often $1,000 to $5,000 depending on move size and distance.

Partial PPMs are also available: the government ships most of your belongings via a government-arranged mover, and you transport a smaller portion yourself for a partial reimbursement.
