USDOT Number

Definition

A unique identification number assigned by the FMCSA to every interstate mover. Used to track safety records, insurance, and complaints. Verify any mover's USDOT at protectyourmove.gov.

The USDOT (United States Department of Transportation) number is a mandatory registration for any company transporting household goods across state lines. It serves as a unique identifier in the FMCSA database.

What the USDOT number tells you: the company's registration status (active or inactive), entity type (carrier, broker, or both), insurance status, safety rating (if inspected), complaint history (last 3 years), and the number of trucks and drivers.

How to verify: visit protectyourmove.gov and enter the USDOT number or company name. Check that the status is "Active" and the entity type matches what you expect (Carrier for direct movers, Broker for intermediaries).

Red flags: the company cannot provide a USDOT number, the USDOT number belongs to a different company name, the registration status is "Inactive" or "Not Authorized," or the company has a high complaint ratio.

In addition to the USDOT number, interstate movers also need an MC (Motor Carrier) number for operating authority. Both should be active and verifiable in the FMCSA database.
