Non-Binding Estimate

Definition

An approximate price based on estimated weight and services. The final cost is determined by the actual weight of your shipment, which may be higher or lower than the estimate.

A non-binding estimate is the mover's best guess of what your move will cost. It is not a guarantee. The final price is calculated from the actual weight of your shipment (measured at a certified scale) multiplied by the rate per hundredweight.

Non-binding estimates frequently come in lower than the final bill because movers may underestimate weight to win the business. Industry data suggests the final bill is typically 10-25% higher than the non-binding estimate.

Federal regulation provides some protection: on delivery day, the mover can only require payment of up to 110% of the non-binding estimate. Any charges above 110% must be paid within 30 days of delivery.

For the most accurate non-binding estimate, insist on an in-home or video survey rather than a phone-based estimate. The more the mover sees, the closer their estimate will be to the actual cost.
