SIT (Storage in Transit)

Definition

Temporary warehouse storage provided by the mover when there is a gap between pickup and delivery dates. The first 30 days typically costs $150 to $300. Common when move-in and move-out dates do not align.

Storage in Transit is a service where the mover stores your shipment in their warehouse (or an agent's warehouse) until you are ready for delivery. It is a standard option offered by most long-distance movers.

How it works: your belongings are loaded onto the truck at your origin, transported to a warehouse near your destination, stored temporarily, and then delivered when you are ready. The mover handles all logistics.

Costs: the first 30 days typically run $150-$300 per month for a 2-bedroom household. Additional months are priced similarly. Some movers offer the first 30 days free or at a reduced rate as a promotional incentive.

SIT is useful when: your new home is not ready yet, you are house hunting at the destination, your lease start date is after your move-out date, or you are waiting for a home purchase to close.

Important: your valuation coverage (released value or FVP) should extend to the storage period. Confirm this with your mover. Items in SIT are typically stored in wooden vaults or crates within the warehouse, not in your original boxes alone.
