What is the PPM/DITY weight allowance by military rank?

Quick Answer

Weight allowances range from 5,000 lbs (E-1 with dependents) to 18,000 lbs (O-6+ with dependents). Without dependents, allowances are lower. Exceeding your weight allowance means you pay for the overage out of pocket.

The Department of Defense sets weight allowances for household goods shipments based on pay grade and dependency status. These limits apply to both government-arranged moves and PPMs.

Enlisted weight allowances (with dependents / without dependents): E-1: 5,000 / 2,000 lbs. E-2: 5,000 / 2,000 lbs. E-3: 5,000 / 2,000 lbs. E-4: 7,000 / 3,500 lbs. E-5: 9,000 / 7,000 lbs. E-6: 11,000 / 8,000 lbs. E-7: 13,000 / 10,500 lbs. E-8: 14,000 / 12,000 lbs. E-9: 14,500 / 13,000 lbs.

Officer weight allowances (with dependents / without dependents): O-1/W-1: 10,000 / 7,000 lbs. O-2/W-2: 12,500 / 9,000 lbs. O-3/W-3: 14,000 / 10,000 lbs. O-4/W-4: 14,000 / 11,000 lbs. O-5/W-5: 16,000 / 12,500 lbs. O-6: 18,000 / 14,000 lbs. O-7 and above: 18,000 / 14,000 lbs.

What counts toward weight: all household goods, furniture, appliances, boxes, and professional gear. What does not count: your vehicle (shipped separately), consumable goods purchased overseas (limited), and professional books/papers (up to 2,000 lbs separate allowance for officers).

If you exceed your weight allowance, you pay the cost of transporting the overage. This can be significant - overage charges are calculated at the government's contract rate per pound per mile. A 500-pound overage on a 2,000-mile move could cost $500-$1,000 out of pocket.

Tip: weigh your shipment before the move if possible. If you are close to the limit, donate, sell, or leave behind low-value heavy items. Professional gear and pro-books allowances can help create headroom.
