What is a military PCS move?

Quick Answer

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move is a military-ordered relocation. The government covers moving costs through two options: a government-arranged move (GBL/HHG) where the military hires movers for you, or a PPM/DITY where you move yourself and get reimbursed.

PCS (Permanent Change of Station) moves are relocations ordered by the military when a service member is assigned to a new duty station. Here is how they work.

Two main options: Government-arranged move (HHG/GBL): the Transportation Management Office (TMO) arranges a moving company. The government pays the mover directly. You do not pay out of pocket for the move itself. Weight limits apply based on rank and dependency status.

Personally Procured Move (PPM, formerly DITY): you arrange and handle the move yourself. The government reimburses you based on what a government move would have cost. If your actual costs are less than the reimbursement, you keep the difference as incentive pay (taxable income). This can be a significant financial benefit for smaller moves.

Weight allowances by pay grade: E-1 to E-4 (5,000-8,000 lbs with dependents), E-5 to E-9 (11,000-14,500 lbs with dependents), O-1 to O-3 (12,000-14,000 lbs with dependents), O-4 and above (14,000-18,000 lbs with dependents). Without dependents, allowances are roughly 60-75% of these amounts.

Key benefits: Dislocation Allowance (DLA) - a flat payment to cover miscellaneous moving expenses. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) - up to 10 days of hotel costs during the move. Mileage reimbursement for driving to the new duty station. Per diem for meals during travel.

Important timelines: contact your local TMO as soon as you receive orders. Book your move 6-8 weeks ahead, especially during PCS season (May through August). File all PPM reimbursement claims within 45 days of arrival.
