How do I move a home office setup?

Quick Answer

Photograph your desk and cable setup before disconnecting anything. Back up all data. Pack monitors in original boxes or wrapped in blankets. Label every cable. Transport hard drives and laptops in your car, not the moving truck.

A home office move requires extra care because of expensive electronics and the need to get back to work quickly after the move.

Before disconnecting: photograph your entire setup from multiple angles - the desk arrangement, cable routing behind the desk, monitor positions, and any peripheral connections. This saves hours when reassembling. Back up all data to cloud storage and an external drive. Do not rely on just one backup.

Packing electronics: monitors should go in original boxes if you kept them. If not, wrap in a soft blanket, then bubble wrap, and pack in a box with padding on all sides. Desktop towers: remove the graphics card and any loose internal components, pack them in anti-static bags. Wrap the tower in a moving blanket. Printers: remove ink cartridges and pack separately in sealed bags (they leak). Secure the scanner lid.

Cable management: label every cable at both ends before disconnecting. Use colored tape, numbered labels, or a label maker. Bundle cables by device using zip ties or velcro straps. Pack cables in a clearly labeled bag or box.

What to carry in your personal vehicle: laptop, external hard drives, important documents, and anything irreplaceable or extremely expensive. The temperature-controlled, shock-absorbing environment of your car is safer than a moving truck.

Reassembly priority: set up your desk, chair, and monitor first. Connect internet before anything else (you may need to troubleshoot). Reference your photos for cable routing and desk arrangement. Test everything before breaking down the packing materials.

Timeline: if you work from home, plan to have your office functional within 24 hours of arrival. Consider working from a co-working space or coffee shop for the first day while movers unload.
